I met my first friend at age 3-1/2. We had just moved to the burbs and I believe I walked over to her house, rang the doorbell and asked an adult there if there were any kids that lived there that I could play with. If you know me, this probably doesn't surprise you. Yes, I have always been a bit of an aggressive friend getter. Fortunately, there wasn't a pedophile that lived there but a girl my age. Lauren. My lifelong friend. The first day we played together we went down to her unfinished basement and I have a clear memory of sitting on the steps saying, "Friend, I'm frinsty(thirsty)". We have been friends ever since.
I have been making more of an effort to let people around me know how I feel about them. This is not limited to family! It is easy for me to be affectionate with my family but for some reason I am awkward when telling a good friend how much they are appreciated or the fact that I love them. Why is that?
What I appreciate most about my female friends is to be totally at ease talking about anything - no judgement allowed. To be able to belly laugh over someone's story of silly experiences in college that they share (and not judge of course!). For someone to tell me I have something in my teeth at the beginning of the night (not as we are leaving). To know that I can count on them in good times and bad. For someone to inquire about my interests, especially if they have not interest in it! The list goes on......And I try to reciprocate all of this.
Girlfriends - I love you. You keep me sane, you help me feel normal when life feels anything but and you make me laugh. You know who you are!
As for Lauren, she has just returned from a tumultuous year in Zimbabwe - what do you say girl - I am frinsty, let's get a beer! (Check out her blog at www.teather.blogspot.com)
