This year I approached Christmas with a much different view. When my mother-in-law asked me to come up with my Christmas wish list, I sat down and tried really, really hard. I couldn't think of anything. I came to the conclusion that I don't need anything. Then I thought about how lucky that is.....to not need anything. Then I went to think about things that I want. I drew a blank there as well. Hmmmmm, I don't need OR want anything?
Matt and I have never been big gift givers to one another. We do lots of nice things for one another, but we have always kept things small. See, we don't like stuff. Things(as in objects) are stressful. The more you have, the more space you need and really, nobody needs that much stuff. My mom is a pack rat. They have a large two car garage and they can't park either car inside because of all of their stuff. That is insane to me!
Okay, back to Christmas. This year I wanted to really put some thought into Matt's gift. I thought long and hard about the past year and came up with one thing. Every time he has to clean out the gutters, he walks over to the neighbors house with is tail between his legs to ask them if he can borrow their extension ladder. So, I figured I would put an end to this craziness and get him his very own ladder. I know, romantic.
It turns out that Matt also put much more thought into my gift this year and spent a bit more than usual. I opened my gift to find a really nice digital camera with all the fixin's. Mind you, we have a digital camera already that works okay.....no complaints from me but my husband gets annoyed when he knows the quality can be so much better. I still remember the days of point, click, wind.....so anything is better than that.
It turns out that I bought him a ladder so he could clean the gutters and he bought US a camera so we could take pictures. Hmmm, not quite like The Gift of the Magi, but it might be about as close as we get! However, to not need or want anything is a gift in of itself, so a brand new camera is an extra bonus!
I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday. Gunnar is still with us(see last post), his steroids are a miracle so we are enjoying him for now! Thanks for all of your kind comments!
Happy New Year!

My honey always jokes I get him things I can use:) (bike box being the most recent..holds one bike!) but we share the camera as well and just got a new laptop. Kinda the best bc as you said we all have enough chatch-keys..phonetic but you get it.
glad the pooch is holding string, our dog is the same- nor ready for the happy hunting ground yet!
julia
oops
string = Strong! Darn auto correct on this iPod!
My husband and I have the same philosophy about stuff. I hate feeling like my possessions own me rather than the other way around. We are constantly getting rid of stuff and love nothing more than a neat, roomy closet and empty countertops. Glad to know we're not alone!
PS> O. Henry's Gift of the Magi is one of my all-time favorite stories ever. Still makes me tear up a little:)
So glad to hear about the pups :)
What a lovely blog, and what a wonderful relationship.
merry xmas!

p.s. Dome Running isn't open this week - closed for the holidays. I just found out...
